Michael "Mike" McFarland, Western Region President

Mike joined Pretrial Services in the District of Oregon (Portland) as a contractor in 1995, after working for a year as a contractor in the Western District of Washington. Mike was hired as an officer assistant in 1996, and promoted to officer in 1998. He has been a lead officer in the supervision unit in the past and most recently, was promoted in 2008 as his district’s Location Monitoring Specialist. He is also the Employee Dispute Resolution Coordinator for his office. Mike has been involved in officer safety projects since 1998, including curriculum planning and instruction. He assisted in the development and instruction in two 9th Circuit Pretrial Services Safety Academies in Tucson, Arizona and Pasadena, California in 2002. He has been a member of the Federal Probation and Pretrial Services Officer's Association since 1998 and was part of a group of FPPOA members who put together the Empty Hand Control Training Manuel which laid the groundwork for a national model for safety policies, which was adopted and expanded by the Administrative Office and is part of the FLETC program.

About the Region:

The Western Region of the FFPPOA consists of 26 districts covering 12 states and one territory. It is the largest of the regions of the FPPOA and also includes one of the largest judicial districts, C/CA Probation and one of the smallest, the 94th judicial District of Saipan. The Western Region extends westward from the states of Wyoming and Colorado to Alaska, Hawaii and the islands of Guam and Saipan. There are approx 1000 officers employed in the region which covers both the 8th and the 9th Circuits.
